A flywheel is a part that absorbs torque fluctuations that occur during the engine's operating process and stabilizes rotation, and is attached to the rear end of the engine's crankshaft (or eccentric shaft in the case of an RE). In the case of lightweight flywheels for tuning, weight (mass) is generally used as an indicator of performance, but the magnitude of the moment of inertia, i.e., whether the mass is concentrated at the center of rotation or on the periphery, is the key to the engine's characteristics.
The moment of inertia is like a coefficient that determines the ease of rotation. If it is small, the response improves, but there are disadvantages such as stalling, lack of torque at low revolutions, and increased vibration. Conversely, if it is large, the rotation becomes smoother, but the response deteriorates. That's why it is difficult to strike a balance. In mass-produced cars, a large moment of inertia is unavoidable due to considerations of ease of handling and comfort, but there is room for improvement if the focus is on drivers who want a sense of unity with the car.
Our "sports flywheel" reduces the moment of inertia by 28-37% compared to mass production (for reciprocating engines). It is designed to provide quick accelerator response and stress-free operability that synchronizes with the driver's sensibility when driving on the street. It is made of chrome molybdenum steel, which has excellent thermal stability. If possible, we recommend installing it together with a clutch line to enhance the direct feeling when operating the clutch.
